The Dakota Dunes Casino now pollutes our night sky with seven
332 million
candlepower spotlights. SIGA uses these excessive spotlights solely to brand its name across the night sky for dozens of kilometres beyond its property borders. A short time ago, we enjoyed dark country skies filled with beautiful stars – truly the
Land of Living Skies!
The spotlights waste energy, disrupt wildlife, create glare and have introduced a nuisance and loss of heritage in the community. The lights have removed the enjoyment of the skies and properties from our local citizens.
But casinos can be eco-friendly without causing light pollution. Desert Diamond (Arizona) and Edgewater (Vancouver) were designed to blend in with their environments, communities and neighbourhoods without the use of invasive lights. We cannot, however, always rely on businesses to be good corporate neighbours.
We request that the Government of Saskatchewan legislate minimum standards for light pollution abatement to protect the sky and the environment for its citizens.
Our Land of Living Skies must be respected for all 24 hours of the day and night.
We request that SIGA turn the Dakota Dunes Teepee of Light off and repoint the parking lot lights to eliminate pollution and glare that they currently produce.
We further request that SIGA remove the Teepee of Light from from the Painted Hand Casino in downtown Yorkton, and from the designs of the four other casinos being built or renovated and replace the lights with a design that respects the Land of Living Skies heritage, a design that fits with community expectations instead of one that dominates them.
